The number one piece of feedback we received from customers over our first year was that you love our electric and flameless value proposition but want faster boil times. So… we did! The EcoSimmer 140 is now up to 40% faster than our original EcoSimmer.
We’re excited to bring you this new solution and want to outline all of the new features that come along with our new product:
1. Improved Boil Time
The new EcoSimmer 140's performance is about 40% faster than the original EcoSimmer's 100W boil time. This is true for reaching "Simmer" temp (80C)—enough for coffee, oatmeal, and rehydrating most freeze-dried meals—as well as for Boil temp (100C).
- 1 cup (8 oz): 10 minutes to Simmer (80C); 14 minutes to boil (100C)
- 2 cup (16 oz): 18 minutes to Simmer (80C); 25 minutes to boil (100C)
Note: boil times vary with elevation and are based on water starting at 20C room temperature
We made several modifications to our original EcoSimmer to achieve this:
- New 140W USB-C Technology: Put simply, more power = faster boil times. We want to remain committed to the USB-C standard so that you can use a single battery or charger for all of your devices on trail: phone, camera, headlamp, and EcoSimmer. So, with new 140W PD USB-C technology newly hitting the market, we updated our EcoSimmer internals to support this new power!
- Electronic Optimizations: Unfortunately, the full voltage from the power source doesn’t get to the product—this is true for all products, not just EcoSimmer—and even occurs over our the 3-foot USB-C cable that ships with our product. Additionally, with some components rated with +/- 5% tolerances, we can’t always supply full power to our electronics. While both of these concepts still impact EcoSimmer, we’ve optimized our design to maximize power delivery.
2. Updated Boil Detect
We heard several customers ask for EcoSimmer to achieve rolling boils as opposed to a soft boils. There are many variables that impact the type of boil achieved, including things such as elevation, so we’ve updated our programming to ensure a more consistent experience across our units. Now, when a boil is detected—regardless of type—EcoSimmer will continue boiling for a few more minutes before turning off.
What does this do to your battery? As long as heat is still being applied, power will continue to be drained, so your battery may expend a few additional Watt-hours during this additional boiling. However, you can always still unplug EcoSimmer at any time to conserve battery.
3. Increased Power Flexibility
EcoSimmer has always been able to be used with multiple power sources—batteries, power stations, AC or DC chargers—but it required a 100W power source. Now, EcoSimmer can be used at multiple wattages! Any USB-C power source between 100W and 140W will power EcoSimmer. So, even if you forget your 140W battery or cable, you can rest assured you’ll be able to boil water and to make meals and drinks wherever you go.
The new EcoSimmer 140 will actually ship with a 240W USB-C cable. This cable can be used for practically any USB-C application—from 45W to 60W to 100W to 140W, 240W—so we expect this may be your new favorite cable for at least the next few years. We still haven’t seen any companies make batteries, power stations, or AD or DC adapters to output 240W via USB-C, but we’ll be keeping an eye out!
We’re Excited
We can’t wait for you all to try our new EcoSimmer 140 this backpacking season, and for you to experience its improved performance and functionality. We’ve appreciated hearing your feedback over your first year and first backpacking season on the market, and we look forward to hearing more as this second season unfolds.
