Humble Beginnings: A Solution Found in Phipps Pass

Founder of EcoSimmer Tom Swift holding EcoSimmer Electric Backpacking Stove in front of Lake and mountains

What started as a backpacking trip near Lake Tahoe turned into an innovative idea.

EcoSimmer's co-founders (father and son, Bill and Tom Swift) were backpacking through the Desolation Wilderness to stay the night at Phipps Lake. During this trek, they encountered hardly any humans, explored alpine lakes, and had incredible luck with fly fishing.

The two backpackers spent time discussing their main hobbies: the outdoors, cooking, and energy. This led to a realization: besides food, their fuel canisters were the only pieces of equipment that were non-reusable and non-multi-functional.

The vision for EcoSimmer began.

EcoSimmer: The Safest Backpacking Stove

Each year, devastating forest fires threaten the backcountry. We, as backpackers, are obligated to be environmentally responsible while venturing into the wilderness.

Gas stoves currently dominate the shelves at camping and hiking stores, but this presents a problem. Butane and propane camping stoves emit carbon dioxide and flames that can cause a fire hazard. Moreover, they produce significant amounts of carbon monoxide, making them unsafe to use indoors — such as in your tent, van, or camper.

However, EcoSimmer addresses the safety concerns pertaining to both you and the environment. Since it works electrically, it simmers water for meals and beverages without use of an open flame. On rainy days, you can even heat liquids safely while staying dry in your tent.

Do you sometimes get caught up in the moment, absorbing the sounds and scenery of the wilderness? We do too, and EcoSimmer is completely silent, so you can keep on enjoying nature! EcoSimmer also offers safety features that prevent overheating: the EcoSimmer stove will turn off automatically if there are insufficient contents inside, or when it reaches a simmer (boiling).

When you use EcoSimmer, you're a part of the solution. Using eco-friendly products reduces the risk of starting a forest fire in the backcountry. Smokey the Bear would be proud!

A Portable and Lightweight Backpacking Stove

Imagine stress-free and easy backcountry cooking. No gas canisters, lighters, or bulky equipment. Just a compact and lightweight stove that operates solely on battery power.

That's the EcoSimmer idea; backpacking without the hassle.

It's portable enough to fit in your pack or your water bottle pocket for easy access and has a minimalistic design. All you need is your EcoSimmer stove, a USB-C cable, and a USB-C battery.

Go ahead — set up your campsite, and lounge in your hammock as EcoSimmer does the work for you. Simply add water and plug in a USB-C battery. It brings water and other liquids to a boil, so you can it use for tea, coffee, oatmeal, dehydrated meals, and more. Once it's hot, prepare your meal or beverage and enjoy. Cleanup is easy, so you'll have more time to connect with Mama Nature.

It's also handy for extended camping trips or at group base camps. If you have a solar panel and a bit of sunny weather, you can leave your USB-C batteries charging while you're off exploring.

Nature is unpredictable, but EcoSimmer is built to endure. With IP54-rated water resistance, your camping stove won't be compromised if you run into rain, condensation, or a spilled beverage.

Our Mission — An Eco-Friendly and Safe Camping Stove

Traditional camping stoves require gas canisters. Check out EcoSimmer, the first fully electric backpacking stove that's portable, simple, and eco-friendly.

After recognizing the drawbacks and inconveniences of traditional backpacking stoves, we aimed for an eco-friendly, flameless design. Our goal is to practice and encourage outdoor ethics, such as the Leave No Trace principles.

It's the same mission Yvon Chouinard, the founder of Patagonia, had in mind:

In 1972, Yvon rocked the climbing world by launching the "clean climbing" era. He decided to phase out the metal pitons that damaged the rocks they climbed. These were replaced by chocks that are easy to remove and cause less damage to the rock. Just this one innovation made a huge ripple in environmental protection used by backpackers.

By making eco-friendly choices, we can ensure the wilderness is here for younger generations to keep exploring —

— and it can all start with a hike through Phipps Pass.

Where can I buy an EcoSimmer backpacking stove?

Currently, EcoSimmer is available online at www.ecosimmer.com. It's manufactured in the USA and ready to ship anywhere within the USA or Canada.

Keep in mind that the battery pack is sold separately. However, you can check out our comprehensive battery guide, and view a few compatible options.

How do you use EcoSimmer backpacking stove?

It's simple, just follow these steps:

  1. Add water. Pour water, or the liquid of your choice into your EcoSimmer camping stove. This could be water, coffee, tea, or whatever you're craving.
  2. Plug it in. Using your USB-C cable, connect your EcoSimmer to a USB-C battery pack. Kick back and wait for your liquid to reach a boil — the stove will shut off automatically when it reaches this point.
  3. Relax and enjoy! Add the hot liquid to your dehydrated meal or beverage and enjoy. EcoSimmer is designed so that you can sip straight from the container.

Is EcoSimmer a camping stove that you can use indoors?

Absolutely! EcoSimmer is entirely safe to use in tight parameters — even in your tent. It's battery-powered and cool to the outside touch, so there is no risk of catching nearby objects on fire. Plus, since it doesn't run on gas, there are no harmful emissions you have to worry about inhaling.

On top of this, EcoSimmer's automated features ensure that it won't overheat. If it detects insufficient liquids and is heating up too quickly, it shuts off. EcoSimmer will also automatically shut off as soon as a boil is reached.

Gas-powered stoves meanwhile can expose you to carbon monoxide when used indoors, such as in a van or camper. You especially should not attempt using these in a tent, as the flame emitted by butane and propane stoves presents a serious fire risk. Many tent fabrics are highly flammable!
